Minecraft launches on Switch 2 with Vibrant Visuals and a free upgrade for digital owners

New lighting, fog and shadows reach the Super Mario world too. Here is who qualifies for the free upgrade, and where the visual improvements do not work.

Minecraft’s Switch 2 edition launched on October 27 with Vibrant Visuals. Players who already own the digital Switch version can move to the new edition without buying the game again.

A different look, with limits

Vibrant Visuals adds directional lighting, volumetric fog and dynamic shadows. Support includes Nintendo’s exclusive Super Mario Mash-Up Pack and compatible Minecraft Marketplace content.

There is a catch for couch multiplayer: the visual mode is unavailable in split-screen. Certain Marketplace worlds and content also do not support it, so the new look will not follow you everywhere.

A free upgrade is a good reason to revisit an old world and see it in a new light.

Who gets the free upgrade?

Owners of a digital copy of Minecraft for Switch can upgrade to the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition for free through Nintendo eShop only. That offer applies to digital owners; a physical copy does not qualify for this free upgrade.

New buyers can choose Standard, Deluxe or Ultimate. The more expensive collections are not needed for Vibrant Visuals or its Super Mario support: both are included in Standard.

Existing Switch players can also carry their worlds over to Switch 2 and continue their builds.
