Discord will make messages from public communities searchable on the web

Tips and answers shared in Discord communities will become accessible beyond their members. Private conversations are excluded, and users can turn message sharing off.

A reply you post in a gaming Discord could soon reach people who have never joined that server. The company has announced plans to make content from public communities accessible through web search, including messages written by their members.

The change covers servers with at least 1,000 members whose administrators have opted into Discord’s discovery system. Private servers and direct messages, including group conversations, are excluded.

The first stage starts on November 16. Each eligible server will get a web page that can include summaries of public discussions from that day onward. From mid-December, Discord will gradually add selected individual messages over several weeks. Messages sent before that stage begins will not be included.

Discord says the messages will appear without usernames or profile pictures. Messages from users in the teen age group will not be shared through this feature.

Knowledge buried in Discord chats could help more players, provided people understand what is being shared.

You can switch it off, but timing matters

A new switch under Data & Privacy in user settings controls whether your message content can appear on web pages. It applies across all eligible servers you use. The setting began rolling out on October 27. Under Discord’s published regional rules, it should default to on for eligible users in Israel.

Turning the switch off covers messages you send afterward. A message sent while sharing was enabled can still appear online, even if you have since opted out. To remove it from Discord’s web pages, you need to delete the message in Discord itself. A copy already held by a search engine may remain and require a separate removal request.

Server administrators have their own controls under Web Presence. They can choose participating channels or exclude them all. They also control discussion summaries, which remain unaffected by your personal message-sharing switch.
